Director of Jazz Studies at Georgia Tech, Dr. Chip Crotts has been an on-call artist for the Disney Company and has performed and recorded throughout the US and Europe. A Grammy nominated trumpeter, Chip has worked with many international artists, including Natalie Cole, Boston Brass, Ray Charles, Rhythm and Brass, Manhattan Transfer and Maynard Ferguson. As a first call player for national touring companies and productions, Chip has played on nearly 30 touring shows including Chicago, The Producers, A Chorus Line, The Color Purple, Spamalot, West Side Story and Thoroughly Modern Millie. Equally at home as a classical musician, Chip has presented numerous university recitals and masterclasses and has performed with the orchestras of North Carolina, Alabama, Huntsville, Austin, Tuscaloosa, Altoona, Abilene, and Chattanooga, among others. He can also be heard on several CD’s with the SeaBreeze label, as well as recordings with the University of Texas Wind Ensemble and UT Jazz Orchestra. Dr. Crotts is a passionate teacher and devotes much time giving back to students of all ages. As a jazz educator, Chip has been Director of the Alabama All-State Jazz Ensemble and has presented clinics throughout the Southeast and Texas on jazz pedagogy and development of jazz programs in the schools. He has recently written a series of jazz articles for System Blue Publications and a book on trumpet pedagogy and teaching styles is in the works. Chip greatly enjoys the one on on interaction with younger students and is enthusiastic about sharing his love for trumpet and jazz with others. Dr. Crotts holds degrees from East Carolina University, Penn State University and the Doctor of Musical Arts in Jazz Studies from the University of Texas-Austin. He has served on the faculties of Samford University and Jacksonville State University and currently performs with groups such as the Alabama Symphony, Hunstville Symphony, Night Flight Big Band and Superjazz Big Band. As an Associate Member of The Tuscaloosa Horns, Chip tours regularly with Motown artists such as the Temptations, The Ojays, Four Tops and Franki Valli.
